A tiny freeway (by California standards) is being widened starting this Friday. While there is a permanent traffic nightmare on this short connection between two other freeways, these facts published in our local paper really bring the scale of "small" projects into persepctive.
The agencies responsible for this crossover connector between interstates 580 and 880 identified some fanciful facts about the project:
- Contractors will use enough new dirt to fill a football field 20 feet deep.
- The amount of planned traffic striping would circle all of Lake Tahoe.
- The amount of structural steel could build nine more Statues of Liberty.
- The amount of concrete could fill the Washington Monument 29 times.
- The amount of asphalt concrete pavement to be installed could pave Vatican City with a 3-inch overlay.
